Project

The project SPLIT is set around my bachelor thesis about "Dimensions in Videogames". Within my thesis I created a small game using UDK that featured a gameplay mechanic that enables you to switch between Dimensions.

If you jump towards minute 1:44 you'll see the first example that shows off an easy puzzle based upon a simple fact: an object only exists in its respective dimension, hence you can only interact with it while being present in this very dimension. The video is showing it in a simple way but there is much more you can do with it.

Besides learning a lot about Dimensions within video games I figured out many other things about games in general. Especially why games are fun, what a good game should deliver and how they can affect us. For that we have to look at how our brain works and even though it seems quite complex, there is one thing it does most if not all the time: it tries to find patterns and fill in the blanks. Taking this hypothesis further, we can find a way to even describe fun in general: "Fun is the act of mastering a problem mentally" (Raph Koster, a Theory of Fun).

But let us not get too deep and let me sum it up. A good game consists of a continuous learning experience without overwhelming or bore the player (called Flow). Sure that's just the core and other things like story, atmosphere, sound, immersion etc. add up but you should understand what I'm getting at.

So now the final question: Why this project? After I graduated I was trying to start a business with a former friend and colleague and it went great. We had the knowledge and ideas for our first game. Together we came up with great concepts and the company itself was close of being launched but then... he backed out. I was alone. I was desperate. I didn't know what to do. I could have simply looked for a job in the gaming industry or somewhere else but I wasn't gonna give up my dream.

Therefore I made a decision: I won't give up. I will do anything to make it happen cause if you truly believe in something and you know, you're meant for it and it makes you happy... go for it. Life is too short to just take the easiest route, you gotta fight and take risks. THAT is what I did: I decided to not give up and develop a game on my own. And SPLIT is the chance for me to live my dream. It's the project that either makes or breaks me... the project of my life.
